Tips for Teachers

Many teachers need some help addressing students who stutter. First and foremost, do not ask them to ‘slow down’ or ‘take a breath’. The fact that they might slow down will not take take away their stuttering. Secondly, please let them finish what they saying without interrupting or finishing the “troublesome” word for them. People who stutter want their message to be heard and to express themselves independently, without any assistance. What is truly important is to treat them the same way you’d treat your other students and just allow more time for the who happen to stutter, to say what they want. It is true what they say: “what they are saying is worth waiting for” (no matter how long it may take).
