Ready, set… start speech therapy

Many parents ask if they should wait or start therapy now…. My go-to answer is usually to start with an evaluation, especially when you see your child is struggling to communicate with his peers and caregivers. When parents choose to wait, it leads to frustration on behalf of the child and continues to spiral. It is important, of course, to go off of the milestone chart to see what is/is not developmentally expected for their age. However, every child is different and a consultation with a speech therapist could never hurt. Whether it is an onset of stuttering, a language delay (not saying enough words, not putting words together, etc.) or a speech delay (not being understood by familiar and unfamiliar listeners due to not producing the sounds correctly), it is crucial to see speech therapy as soon as possible. Here, at Clearversation Speech and Stuttering therapy, we take this matter seriously and welcome scheduling consultations and/or evaluations to make sure the child is not struggling to speak. It is better to reach out and double-check than wait to see if it resolves on its own. Chances are, a speech and language intervention will be needed sooner rather than later.
